Vijayendra Rao
Vijayendra Rao is a development economist and social scientist who combines econometric methods with ethnography. He spent 27 years as a Lead Economist in the Development Economics Research Group at the World Bank, and is currently the Roberta Buffett Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner in Residence at Northwestern University. His interests include gender, culture, participation, deliberative democracy, political economy, and innovations in mixed methods. His recent methodological work with Julian Ashwin, Monica Biradavolu and others uses natural language processing to analyze open-ended interviews at scale and compares it to LLM based qualitative analysis. His latest book, Revolution by Stealth: How Women's Groups Catalyzed a Cultural Transformation in Bihar (with Shruti Majumdar and Paromita Sanyal), is forthcoming from Cambridge University Press in September 2026.
